Our 1st Argument about The Baby

Marissa wants me to buy some fancy crib for the baby. Traditionally, babies sleep in the same bed as the parents, between the parents, in The Philippines. That is out because I weight about 208 pounds and I drink some and take sleeping pills sometimes. I also have a tendency to sleep close to my partner, wrap up with them in my arms and often throw a leg over them. Surely this would not be good for the baby.

However, Marissa bought a small unfinished wooden crib for her little store at Tiano and Mabini Streets for our niece to sleep in when she’s at the store, and I thought one of these would be perfectly adequate for our baby too. But noooooo. That will not do. I suggested to Marissa that for the cost of one of those expensive cribs we could buy five of the small inexpensive ones and then have one for every room in the house, the kitchen, the living room, the family room, and one for our bedroom, and one for Marissa’s parents room also. And with the money left over we’d have plenty for blankets and pillows to dress up all those cribs.

Marissa likes the idea of having many cribs, but still wants a fancy one. I don’t see any use for it. So, for the first couple of weeks at least I’ve decided we’ll use a cardboard box and just put newspapers in the bottom, and keep a good supply of newspapers on hand to keep the box clean. Plus, we could even shred some of the newspapers to make the bottom softer for the baby. I’ll post photos here when I have them.

Are you NUTS? I side with Marissa and you can tell Marissa so. This is a baby, not a pet.

Don’t worry. I have already secured a good supply of cardboard boxes and my attorney says he’ll turn over all his newspapers to me until the baby is potty trained. I have already made arrangements for new cardboard boxes and I will buy 20 or them or so. I agree he’s my first child and a son. But money is a little tight right now, and I don’t worry, I will splurge for a blanket to be put down over the newspaper on the bottom of the box, and another blanket to cover him with, and surely a small pillow to put his head, but I do NOT see call for some expensive crib when a half dozen boxes scattered around the house will suit him just fine. He’s not going to do anything but eat, poop, and sleep for the first six months anyway. Be then he’ll be able to walk and won’t want to stay in his box anymore.

Another thing. A baby is not aware of his surroundings for a long time. A newborn is not going to look up at a golden crib and say or think, “Man, I got it going on”. Nor is a newborn likely to look up and say, “My parents must be poor to keep me in a cheap cardboard box like this”. And as for the difference between an infant pet and a human infant, there really isn’t a lot of difference except in how you feel about them, except in what they mean to you. Keeping a newborn in a cardboard box with plenty of shredded newspaper is likely a very sound and effective way of controlling his enviroment healthily.

I always see new born children on the way to work when I take the MRT train here in Makati. Sometime they have cardboard, but most of the time they just sleep on the stairs.

As long as you don’t by Foam, it very bad for the back, I prefer Kapok beds made from bamboo fibers…

Dude, i know that in our time right now we need to save some money for a lot of reason but to be cheap with your own flesh and blood means that you don’t really care for your own baby. how much would a crib cost??? yeah you are right that the baby would not care much of his bed, but a part of growing up starts in the babies crib,.. what if you wife got you a new bed made in a cardboard box, and for your cushion would be the old newspaper that goes for you blanket and pillows, how do you think would you feel… stop being a cheap ass, and buy your baby a proper crib,.. even if i am not a father yet i know that proper parent care starts in the child’s bed,.. jesus!!! i hope that on of this day someone could smack you in the head for even thinking about that kind of idea…
