Saint John’s Festival, Jiminez, Misamis Occidental
On the weekend of June 23rd, 2007, we attended the Saint John’s Fiesta in Jimenez in the Province of Missamis Occidental.
Marissa loves lechon baboy (roasted pig). She especially likes the ears.
Above is the type of spit upon which a lechon baboy is roasted. A bamboo pole about 3-inches in diameter is shoved down the baboys throat and out his arse. His legs are strapped to the pole fore and aft, then he’s slowly turned over the coals.
There was a carnival in town. Jojo, his girlfriend, Jenny, and my nephew, Anfernee, ride the ferris wheel.
Anfernee was not too happy about what he saw in the haunted house ride.
Marissa wins a prize for her pellet shooting skills.
There was quite a parade.
People came to the Fiesta any way they could. There were at least 15 people in the Suzuki Multicab, perhaps and more likely as many as 19.
We visited the local graveyard to pay our respects to some passed away relatives. There were some human bones about.
Papa said these were the graves of some of his neighbors, closer in death perhaps than in life.
Before leaving the graveyard we started a small fire from a pile of dead grass and walked through the smoke which chased away the evil spirits that had attached themselves to us.

Having some buko juice (coconut juice) fresh off the tree.
There was a dance at the city gym on Sunday night, which was also attended by about a dozen fully-armed soldiers.
At the end of the day, this guy just had to get some sleep.
