Let me count the ways I love you

Marissa asks me every day why I love her so much.  I haven’t run out of answers yet and I’m pretty sure I never will. Marissa, let me count the ways that I love you.

I love you because of the way you get so absorbed when watching TV, the way you jump when some Covenant grunt surpises you when playing Halo, the way you scream during scary movies.

I love your openness, your lack of black or white, or good or bad thinking, the way you do not rush to judgment, your  innate sense of provisional ethics.  You don’t even know what “provisional ethics” means, yet you exemplify them in your everyday life.

I love you because of how you care for me, the little things you do for me without even telling me, without wanting credit, like washing my socks when the laundry is late, and then “discovering” clean socks in my suitcase, like I should believe in brownies or good fairies.  I love the Santa Claus in you. The magic you would have me believe in.

I love you because you are always happy when you are with me, because you cannot contain how you feel for me, the way you wear your heart on your sleeve, like a badge of honor.

I love you because of the way you seek approval from me and rejoice whenever you get it.  Sometimes I don’t really approve of the way you do things but I tell you I do just because I know you did things the way you thought you should, and so that I can see your rejoice in that approval.

I love you because you are so very proud of me, of having me in your life.

I love you because your parents love me, because your whole family loves me.

I love you because you are pregnant with my child.

I love you because I love you, and I don’t need an explanation why.
